My Perfect Angels

Don’t you just love your children? I know I do – I love them so much, I’d love to share photos I took of them. These photos were taken just today, actually – and my children are SO cooperative. As you can tell, they love getting their photos taken.

Here is my lovely 10-year old daughter….

….and my handsome 16-year old son.

To join in the cooperative spirit, I decided to have a lovely photo taken of myself with my son. We're on the boat today, enjoying the sunshine. What a lovely portrait, don't you think?

And to think we’ll always have these lovely photos as beautiful memories of today. Sigh. They’re so precious, and they grow up so fast. Grab your camera while you can and treasure the day.

Peace.

Fa Ra Ra Ra Ra

So I’m chatting with an old-but-new friend on Facebook this afternoon, and the conversation (somehow) turns to Christmas.

Admittedly, Christmas is a scant 80-some days away, but time flies – and besides, Christmas is always fun to talk about in my world.

We discuss the best music of Christmas (he likes James Taylor; I’m a Trans Siberian Orchestra fan, myself) and then the topic turns to movies relating to Christmas. Now, I’m not even going to get into a debate about what the BEST Christmas movie EVER is – there are so many, and they’re all so different – who can say what the BEST movie is??!

However, my friend and I both agree that “A Christmas Story” is arguably, one of the FUNNIEST movies ever – and especially about Christmas. It is a true classic. It’s one of those rare movies that you can watch over and over again and still laugh hysterically at almost every scene.

His favorite scene? The visit to Santa Claus – where Ralphie begs for the elusive, but dangerous Red Ryder BB Gun. My favorite scene? Hard to say; there are so many memorable ones – but I really like when the family goes to the Chinese restaurant for their Christmas dinner – and they’re serenaded by the waiters. The knife coming down – SWOOSH – chopping off the duck (or is it a goose?) head – kills me. And the version of “Deck the Halls” is a classic. I have to remind my kids that how they sing it in the movie is NOT how it really goes. Fa ra ra ra ra.

Little known trivia: the director of this movie, Bob Clark, initially wanted Jack Nicholson to play the role of “The Old Man.” That would have been weird. It was concerns over the high salary Nicholson would have demanded that led to Darren McGavin getting the role. Amen. I can’t imagine Nicholson in that role – I keep picturing him, with a huge leering grin, peeking in through the door at Ralphie, saying, “Heeeeeere’s Daddy!” Now THAT would have been funny, huh?! NOT!!!

Peace

P.S. The Kansas City Repertory Theater will be showing "A Christmas Story" on stage from Nov. 20 through Dec. 27th - it should be pretty good! Check out their website at www.kcrep.org for ticket information. Support Live Theater!

Give It Away

Last week, I wrote a blog about garage sales – and I used my own twisted, sarcastic spin on some of the customers one deals with at such sales.

In all seriousness, though, we had a very successful garage sale. Part of that, I think, is because we really did have items priced ridiculously cheap. Things were priced to move – and move they did. Right out of my house and into others’ houses. But that’s okay. The old saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” – is quite true; but I’m not saying what we were selling was trash. It was good stuff. Quality. We had a lot of comments on how good the stuff was…and how surprisingly cheap it was.

We also gave away quite a bit of "free" stuff during the sale. That was fun. People couldn't believe that something was free - they were looking for the "catch." No catch. Just a gift. Take it, please.

It’s a good feeling knowing that most of our treasures found a new home. Several times, while ringing up a sale, I commented, “I’m so glad this is going somewhere where it will be appreciated.”

Today, our pool table is moving from our house to a friend’s house – where it will be appreciated by the children of that house. We have a second pool table – did we need two? No; and so this one sold – for a really, really ridiculously low price. And I’m happy as I sit here, watching the movers move it out – knowing that my friend will enjoy it.

Do you have things that can be all but given away? Things that you don’t appreciate anymore – just sitting around, gathering dust? Things that someone else could be enjoying? Gather them up – give them away – move them out.

It will feel really good. Trust me.

Peace.

What Is October?

October.

My favorite month of the year.

October, to me, means:

• red, orange and yellow-colored leaves swirling, swaying, falling to the ground
• purple, yellow and rust-colored mums blooming in my yard
• Halloween and candy and costumed children and Trick-or-Treat
• cooler temperatures, comfy Levis and flannel jackets
• Friday night high-school football games (go, Lee’s Summit West!)
• Saturday afternoon college football games (go, MU!)
• Sunday afternoon NFL games (go, Chiefs!)
• pumpkin patches and corn mazes and hayrides and scarecrows and haunted trails
• the Renaissance Festival
• shorter days and longer nights
• parent/teacher conferences
• a crock-pot full of delicious, hot chili or hot, spicy taco soup
• MOVING into our new home (I HOPE!!!)

Zombie Drivers

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a Super Hero? I confess – I have. If I could have only one “super hero power”, I know what it would be. I would “zap” people who are clueless about driving. You heard me. Idiot drivers would instantly disappear - removing them from the road forever. Wouldn’t that be awesome? It would sure help with traffic problems.

I don’t claim to be the best driver on the road – but I certainly can hold my own. I drive at least the speed limit (okay, okay, true confession: hubby would tell you that I probably drive a little over the speed limit – but not by much, I swear!), and I don’t tailgate or show overt signs of road rage. (That’s because I have kiddies in the car and I don’t want to teach them new four-lettered words!) I don’t drive in the passing lane – unless I’m actually going to – gasp! – pass someone. And I use my turn signals. So, all-in-all, I try to be a polite and courteous driver.

While driving through town, I frequently have to drive through what is known as the “Grandview Triangle.” Now, for my dear readers who are not from around here – allow me to explain the “Triangle.” It would have been named the “Bermuda Triangle” – but that name was already taken, obviously. The Grandview Triangle is a very scary area because while driving through it, strange alien forces swoop in and render drivers’ brains to mush – absolutely wiping out any reasonable intelligence they may have had before entering the Triangle. (Except for me – I’m immune to these forces, of course). People driving through the Triangle turn into clueless, brainless zombies – which is scary, considering the fact they’re behind the wheel of a 2-ton missile going 90 mph. Drivers will suddenly drive 30 miles UNDER the speed limit – or 30 miles OVER the speed limit – or they’ll drive in the passing lane – or they’ll forget all about a turn signal – or they change lanes without looking to see who’s IN the lane! It’s freaky! And frustrating!

My biggest gripe are the people who tailgate – and do it so obnoxiously that I could carry on a conversation with them – I mean, after all, they’re practically in my back seat. Several years ago, while down in Mississippi doing some hurricane reconstruction work with a church group, I stopped at a red light. The guy behind me didn’t stop at the red light – so, consequently, he plowed into me. He hit me so hard it knocked my car into the car in front of me. An SUV sandwich. Ouch. I got a lovely souvenir on that trip – an uncomfortable neck brace I came home with. So pardon me for getting a little nervous when I see someone so close that I can count the freckles on their face in my rear view mirror.

One of these days, when I’m Queen of the World, I will ban inconsiderate and rude drivers. Until then – if you see a little silver, sporty Mazda Speed 6 zooming down the road – especially through the Grandview Triangle– keep your distance – and don’t drive like an idiot. I wouldn’t want to have to “zap” you with my super powers and make you disappear.

Peace.
